Who are the artists to follow on Instagram? In today’s art field, there is a huge amount of artists showing their works on Instagram. Here is a list that will help you to discover (and maybe subscribe!) some artists I like and follow. Feel free to visit their profile and take a look at their artwork, you will probably like it!

Let’s start with some of the emerging artists of Instagram, and after that, we will switch to some who are already famous - but maybe you did not know that you could find them online! I hope you will enjoy this curation.

Follow these artists on Instagram (2023)

Here are some of the best artists to follow if you are interested in the art world. They are (or they will) be big soon, you may know some of them but you will for sure discover new ones. Have a great discovery!

Eser Gunduz (@esergundz)

Eser Gunduz will for sure be one of the most influential artists of this decade. Thanks to his raw, intuitive, and conceptual compositions, we can face impressive pieces which can make us think about big names such as Cy Twombly or Jean-Michel Basquiat. If artists are supposed to create a “manual” to understand life, then Eser is doing great work by making it both clearer but also more mysterious at the same time. And I like it.

Thai Mainhard (@thaimainhard)

Thai Mainhard is an abstract artist, working with a mixed media influence, and creating balanced shapes on the canvas. I consider balance as the main objective of an art piece: Thai is mastering this aspect of creation, with each piece she creates - whether this is a very large piece, or a smaller one, her consistency and her balance can be found everywhere in her work. Take any of her artwork, and present it to someone; you should be able to recognize Thai’s work!

Heath Newman (@heath_wae)

If you are looking for a calm, smooth, and relaxing universe, Heath Newman’s works are made for you. With his minimalistic approach, Heather is creating a contemplative and meditative experience, where the artwork is not only an object dedicated to being decorative, but also represents a “moment”, or an “experience” in which everyone can find something. And, isn’t finding something about ourselves the most interesting thing we can ask to art?

Jean-Paul Donadini (@jeanpauldonadini)

I am pretty sure that you will like Jean-Paul Donadini’s aesthetic and techniques. He successfully created something different, with his “Brosse arrêtée” (“Stopped brush”) series, because the artwork looks alive, in process, and it is more than just a 2D painting. He also put some art history references in some of his works, which makes him a great and fun artist to follow!

Liza Giles (@liza.giles.art)

Liza Giles is proposing minimalistic but powerful artworks. Thanks to a simple and efficient color palette, mostly made with two colors - one for catching the attention, the other one to contrast with the main one, Liza Giles can create powerful poetry directly connecting with emotions! Also, try to focus on the different shapes, and the contrasts between color and negative space, and you will like her work as much as I do!

Brigitte d’Annibale (@brigittedannibale)

What I like about Brigitte d'Annibale's works, is that they are big enough so you can instantly feel the power of the piece. Even more, the mixed media technique is overcharging the composition but with a very nice balance, just as if memories were stacking one above others. Even if she is inactive now, she will probably be back very soon!

Manuela Karin Knaut (@knaut_contemporary)

Manuela Knaut is a very productive abstract artist, with a street art influence because of the compositions she is creating. She perfectly mixes rawness with instinctive compositions, with a cheerful color palette instantly bringing emotions to the people looking at it. Plus, Manuela Knaut is working on a big canvas, which makes it even more interesting, detailed, and powerful.

Paul Kremer (@paulkremer)

Paul Kremer is creating clean and high-powered minimalist artworks, with strange shapes - but every time, the piece’s balance is perfect. It can be read as abstract or purely minimalist, depending on the way you are looking at it, but the use of the negative space techniques is incredible in every work. It is like you can breathe by looking at Paul Kremer’s artworks.

Gabriel Moreno (@gabrielmorenoart)

Gabriel Moreno is creating contemporary figurative paintings, representing tattooed girls in different scenes - mostly real but pop art scenes translated into real life. Thanks to his detailed and perfect drawing technique, Gabriel Moreno is proposing stunning artworks using mostly pencil and charcoal on big wood panels. Women are impressive, and independent and we feel it so much! Probably one of my favorite artists on this list!

Giordan Rubio (@giordanrubio)

I discovered Giordan Rubio by scrolling through social media platforms, and the more I saw his works, the better they looked. This “draft” style, creates a stack of things to say, to show - because there are so many things to say and show! And sometimes, something is more important and takes a bigger place in the composition - balance is hard to reach in this aesthetic, and I think that Giordan masters it. And of course, I am not forgetting the antic references with David, Atlas, or Juno appearing from time to time.

Benka (@benka.1)

Let’s switch to Benka, who is doing more raw and instinctive paintings. His favorite topic is also the name of his main artwork series, entitled “Captcha”. Sometimes chaotic or unordered, Benka is always balanced, which allows us to focus on the amount of information we are receiving through the compositions (but also in our daily life). Definitely someone to follow, and you can read the interview I made with Benka here.

Emre Yusufi (@emreyusufi_art)

Emre Yusufi is creating sculptures, using “Hercules” (the antic character) as a starting point to deploy his vision: pop culture references, fun or unexpected scenes, and even today trends are a good opportunity for Hercules. This is very funny and questioning at the same time, and this is where Emre Yusufi is good - he also creates NFTs with this antic figure, which is another way to collect his work. Can’t wait to see Emre’s new projects!

Bonus: my list of established artists to follow on Instagram

After this list, it is also interesting to focus on artists who have huge visibility (and career!) online. Here again, the names are known but you are maybe not following them on Instagram. This will be a good opportunity to refresh your following list with these big names!

Markus Akesson (@markusakessonvisual)

Markus Akesson is a wonderful artist, mainly working with oil on canvas, painting kids in a realistic aesthetic. But Akesson is also known for his characters hidden under fabrics, with this impressive, strange but poetic look. The work of precision, the way that shadows are empowering the fabrics and the composition itself are amazing. Markus Akesson is one of the best contemporary artists!

Daniel Arsham (@danielarsham)

Daniel Arsham is a designer, but also an artist working on temporality. His sculptures and drawings are representing either antics or pop culture references (such as some Pokémons), but with what he calls the “eroded” aesthetic; which means that time has passed, every single object is incomplete or broken, and some minerals/crystals are now closing the gap created by the time. With this “new retro” aesthetic, Daniel Arsham can work with different topics and build his own, strong, universe.

KAWS (@kaws)

KAWS (or Brian Donnelly) is an installation artist, who works with a specific character and puts him in different positions, scenes, and dimensions. It can be tiny (and you can buy some of them as a series), but it can also be huge - and become something like land art because of the size of the installation. What is interesting is that starting from a simple character, an artist can create a whole universe and be a reference for other artists.

Obey Giant (@obeygiant)

Obey Giant (or Shepard Fairey) is famous all around the world for his posters representing “André The Giant”, a french wrestler who died in 1993. He is one of the most renowned street artists, as he showed his art everywhere in the world, with huge posters of André of course, but also of some public figures (such as President Obama, for instance). You will find a huge amount of work on his Instagram page, which makes it a “must-following” page!

Banksy (@banksy)

Of course, Banksy is… Banksy. Even if his Instagram page is not that updated, you can still discover his works when something new is coming up. And of course, the profile picture is just a black circle showing… nothing! He is even showing a picture of the “Girl with Balloon” that he voluntarily destroyed during the Sotheby’s auction sale a few years ago. But if you like art, then Banksy is someone you should follow on Instagram. Definitely.

Jeff Koons (@jeffkoons)

Jeff Koons is a big name in contemporary art, famous for his sculptures and for turning pop references such as Mona Lisa into something within his own, shiny, universe. Contrary to Banksy, you will find a lot of pictures of Jeff Koons himself, which is always interesting because to understand an artist, it is sometimes good to have more info on him, his life, and so on. Again, it is a great account to follow if you like sculptures, pop art, and contemporary art, then you should follow this page!

Richard Orlinski (@richardorlinski)

Richard Orlinski is a french sculptor, known for his “Kong” series representing King Kong. Orlinski applied his recognizable aesthetic, made of chiseled facets that give this amazing look to every statue he is creating. He usually makes human-sized sculptures, but he can easily go for bigger ones, or smaller ones to create series for people who have a limited budget and would like to collect his art pieces. Today, Richard Orlinski is a very important artist, developing his style everywhere in the world, so do not miss him in your curation!

Thank you for reading these small lists, and I hope you followed some of them - your time looking at artist works on Instagram will be even more interesting, and you will be following some of the best artists on Instagram. If I forgot someone, please let me know and I will be glad to improve this list, to make it even more relevant in the future.

See you soon,

Anthony, from Madrigal Magazine
